REFLECTION ON BLOG (ENTRY 2)

On 11.30 a.m (20 January 2010, Wednesday), Miss Wanie entered our class in Library. Normally, she started our lesson with the recitation Al-Fatihah. As I can say here, UNIT 1 focused on the text as a product that produced by someone, for someone else, and for a particular purpose. I think this is very important element in Critical Literacy. So, at the same time, we are being able to put a frame around a piece of writing. Besides that, this unit also introduced us to the core principles of critical literacy or how to read a text critically. So, as for me, in this part of learning, we will be practising several of the basic skills of critical literacy on a sample text. Miss Wanie has taught us how to understand the article entitled, “Convicted Killer Back at Work” that written by Lucie Morris. Other than that, she also asked us to think critically and not to hush all the time. In fact, the article is about a nurse who named Deborah Parry. She was convicted of murdering her colleague Australian Yvonne Gilford in Saudi Arabia and this caused she missed her full-time job in an English hospital. Truly, when I read this article for the first time, I feels very confuse because the structure of the clause that the writer used. There are some difficulties to understand the article. For example, Lucie Morris used some metaphor words like ‘angle of death’ and ‘brilliant news’. That is why I have some difficulties in understanding the article. However, after I read the article more than 3 times, I can understand what the writer tries to present her ideas. After Miss Wanie has explained the article more details, she also asked us a lot of question based on the article. For instance, she asked a number of questions such as, “What do you understand about this article?”, “What you can understand about ‘angle of death’?” and some other else. Subsequently, Miss Wanie also introduced us to a whole new way of approaching a text critically. There are 10 elements that contains in critical literacy such as, Topic, Content, Source, Audience, Rhetorical Function, Purpose, Perspective, Positioning, Impact and Visual Literacy.

WHAT ABOUT NOW BY; CHRIS DAUGHTRY

Shadows fill an empty heart
As love is fading,
From all the things that we are
But are not saying.
Can we see beyond the scars
And make it to the dawn?

Change the colors of the sky.
And open up to
The ways you made me feel alive,
The ways I loved you.
For all the things that never died,
To make it through the night,
Love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?

The sun is breaking in your eyes
To start a new day.
This broken heart can still survive
With a touch of your grace.
Shadows fade into the light.
I am by your side,
Where love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love, it never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?

Now that we're here,
Now that we've come this far,
Just hold on.
There is nothing to fear,
For I am right beside you.
For all my life,
I am yours.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?

What about now?
What about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it's too late,
Baby, before it's too late,
Baby, before it's too late,
What about now?

After we discussed about the article of “Convicted Killer Back at Work”, Miss Wanie also plays us one song entitled “What About Now” by Chris Daughtry. Actually, she has a mission with the song. Miss Wanie wants all of us understand what the 10 elements are about. The first element would be the topic. The topic is focusing on Humanity, Love and Unrequited Love. The next one will be the content. The content of this song is about a person who is really frustrated with his love, life and nature. The third element is source. The source of the song could be from the radio, internet, CD, record and cassette. The audience could be the all walks of life. Based on the discussion, the rhetorical function of the “What About Now” song was to encouraging and warns about the past to make a change. Also the purpose of the song is to encourage the listeners from all walks of life about making a change in life, love or nature. The seventh element would be the perspective. The perspectives are was in positive, whereby, to teach people on how to make a change in their life, love and nature. The positioning of the song were ‘color of the sky, ‘the sun is breaking in your eyes’, and ‘shadows fade into the light’. Last but not least, the last element of the song was the impact. Truly, the song itself will give the impact towards the listeners. When the listener heard about the song, they might get touched with the beautiful lyric. For me, it meant a lot to the listeners when they heard the song. On behalf of me, this song is really makes me touched and I will not give up even there are a lot of challenges come towards me. Other than that, because of the melody that the singer used also can bring up someone’s spirit to the higher level. So, what about now, miss??...:-)

On 21 January 2010,Thursday,that was the third time Miss Wanie enters our class..After the recitation Al-Fatihah,she started our lesson with continuing the sixth element which is positioning..Other than that, our beloved lecturer also asked us to divide ourselves into 4 groups which means 6 person in each group. After we divided ourselves into 4 groups,Miss Wanie told us some description about tomorrow (22 January 2010) task. For the next class,we will have a debate. Miss Wanie has given 2 title which "Racial Segragation:Malaysia by 2020" and "Muslims Religious Views Understated". Actually the title that given is to present our ideas about what we can predict based on the title. This activity also to make sure all of us think critically.

On 22 January 2010, Friday, we have a debate between the 2 groups which fight together the second title which is "Muslims Religious Views Understated". The government position is hold by Asri's Group whereas the opponent position is hold by Aisyah's Group. Both of the groups fight together with confidently. Asri's Group had misunderstanding about the topic that Miss Wanie has given. Lastly, Aisyah's Group had won the debate on that day. Aisyah's Group had presented several main important point in their debate such as, health, education and foods. The opponent position said that we have to be alert of the issues like health, foods and education. Other than that, they also give the stances that Muslims religions views understated and at the same time, they stands that we have not being bias in terms of understated towards Muslims even though it is roled by Chinese people. It is because, nowadays, Chinese people still concern about Muslims.
