On 28 January 2010, we have our class with Miss Wanie. But, we also continue to watch the movie on 29 January 2010. At that day, we have watching the exciting movie entitled “Beautiful Boxer”. First of all, I would like to explain a little bit about the movie. Beautiful Boxer is a Thai drama that published on 2003. The director for this movie is Ekachai Uekrongtham. It tells the life story of Nong Toom (Asanee Suwan), a famous kathoey or known as male-to-female transgendered person. Actually, this movie is based on the real life story of Parinya Charoenphol.
As for me, this movie is really focused on transvestite issue that very popular and receivable in Thailand. As we can see in the movie, there are also some scenes that very interesting and really attract the audiences. For example, Nong Toom’s battle in the ring, wearing make-up likes blusher, compact powder and lipstick, and he also wearing attractive pink boxer. Other than that, it is also shown that he is really attracted to man, more than woman.
Besides that, as we can see from the movie, it also stated that Nong Toom has a superstitious trust. Actually he is making a sin in his previous life, and he stance that himself should be punished in this age. So, that is why he has to do a transformation to himself, he must be a woman. But, the most special for this movie, it is very different movie because of how the director presents his ideas. For instance, all the kick boxing sequences because they used many ancient Thai techniques. Other than that, the boxers in the film were all professionals in real life so there were real punching.
Now, I would like to identify the 10 elements that related with this movie.
• The first element would be the topic. The topic is focuses on Society.
• The next one would be the content:
-what; the main character in the movie becomes a boxer who underwent a sex change operation to become a woman
-when; while he was a young boy
-who; Nong Toom as a boy (Sarawuth Tangchit), Nong Thoom (Asanee Suwan), Pi Chart (Sorapong Chatree), Nong Thoom’s parents, and the reporter, Jack (Keagan Kang)
- where; Patpong, Bangkok.
• The third element is source. The source of the movie could be from the television, internet, CD, and DVD.
• The audience could be the person who are 18 years old and above. It is because there are some naked scenes that acted by Nong Toom (Asanee Suwan).
• Besides that, based on the movie, there are also the rhetorical function such as informing and explaining. It is because, the author wants to inform and explain his ideas through this great movie on how a young boy can become a girl and lastly his dream is achieved because “he” can become “she” through a sex change operation.
• Other than that, the purpose of the movie is to inform the person who are 18 years old and above about society of transvestites.
• The seventh element would be the perspective. The perspective is in positive because the author of the movie stance that he wants to tell the audiences on how to be themselves even though in terms of a sex change. That’s meant, we have to be ourselves and we cannot be pretending in front of the others.
• The positioning of the movie is the tagline of “He fights like a man so he can become a woman”. So, the phrase describes that when Nong Toom fights strongly like a man, he can do a sex change operation to become a woman. It is because when he won a battle in the ring, he will get the money. So, he can do a sex change operation with the money and at the same time, he can help his family with the money that he got.
• The next element is the impact. The movie itself will give the impacts towards the audiences. When the audiences watching the movie, they might get happy with the story line because lastly Nong Toom can achieve his extraordinary dream, he can become a real woman even though he must undergo a sex change operation.
• Last but not least, the last element would be visual literacy. The visual aspects of the movie are significant because it shows that the suitable setting when there will be any scene. For example, when the boxers want to fight, they fight in the ring.
For me, we should not hate the group of transvestites because they have their own dreams and we should give them support. In a nutshell, I am very attracting with the movie of “Beautiful Boxer” because the story line is not boring and it is very different and interesting movie..! That’s all from me..Thank you!! :-)
