REFLECTION ON BLOG (ENTRY 6)

This week, we have learned the complicated topic entitled Language, Perspective, and Ideology. These topics are presented by Echa and Sis Anne. Honestly, since they are presenting their topic, we are in sleepy mood because we have worked hard in Business Communication Task on 23 February 2010. However, luckily our beloved lecturer, Miss Wanie still understand us!..Thank you Miss!!...:-)
Let’s we go through my reflection on blog..!!

As I can say here, based on the topic that we have learned that day, we must consider the linguistic reflexes of differences of perspective across speakers of the same language. In order to produce a precise focus for the topic, we also will examine some of the newspaper reports that concerning certain events in the African township of Soweto and so on.

So, from this topic, I also can conclude that perspective is a stance that the writer take in the particular text or article, and language and perspective are related each other in order to complete the “10 roles”.

Other than that, to make us understand more about this topic, Miss Wanie has given some example of perspective.

- The feral creature was walking down the pathway
- The feline was strutting down the pavement
- The cat was walking down the pavement

The example given means that perspective can describe in variety of sentences, so, because of that, we can see the varieties of sentences that the writers use in any article or text.

At the grammatical level, processes such as thematic selection, nominalization and passivisation mediate perspective in variety of ways. However, as I understand, two main dimensions are involved such as agentivity, whereas the second dimension has to do with the organization of propositional content in terms of the opposition between ‘given’ and ‘new’ information.

The second topic that we have learned at the same day is Language. This topic are presented by Sis Nor and Ateh. As I can understand what are the content in this topic is about the skills of choosing the right words, defining words, and identifying the emotive and slanted messages some words carry. Thinking critically and arguing effectively often depends on recognizing imprecise language. As I can say here, language is vague, overgeneral, and ambiguous.

Vague words have meanings that are fuzzy and inexact and thus have debatable, borderline applications. Overgenerality occurs when language is too broad and unspecific, whereas ambiguous words have two or more distinct meanings in a particular context, making it difficult if not impossible for the readersto decide which is intended. These explanations are about what I can understand about language.

Other than that, what I can say about the definitions are, definitions can be stipulative (a word’s meaning is determined by the writer), persuasive (the writer reveals bias or a point of view in the definition), lexical (the word is defined in the way it is generally used), or précising (a vague word is given a clear/precise meaning).

However, a good definition should be neither too broad nor too narrow. Other than that, it also should be convey the essential meaning of a word, provide a context where needed, and not be slanted, figurative or circular.

The other new knowledge that I gain based on this interesting topic are, a good critical thinker are careful to avoid vague language, and to define terms, but they are also aware of the manipulations of language. Especially the language that intended to evoke emotional responses that trick us out of attention and skepticism.

My last word; thought and language create our world, and so think critically about the world we must pay careful attention to words..!!..:->
